Free Knitting Pattern: Diaper Cover

Posted on March 2, 2018 in Patterns

Free knitting pattern for a newborn diaper cover. Perfect for beginner knitters. Useful for newborn photography shoots.

I needed a few extra diaper covers and searched but couldn’t find exactly what I was looking for, so I came up with this. It is meant more as a photo prop or to use under a skirt so there is no extra ribbing at the leg hole, and no buttons to get in the way. Just slip it on or off! I used Cascade 220 Superwash in worsted weight (be careful — Cascade uses the “220” label for different weights, which is somewhat confusing.) You should be able to substitute any worsted weight yarn, though I find wool pills less and is stretchier than some materials. Let me know if you make any diaper covers from this pattern and how it worked out for you — this is one of my first times writing down my patterns to share!

Notes: You are starting with the front of the diaper cover and then decreasing until you get to the crotch area. After knitting the crotch area, you will start increasing again until you have 30 stitches on your needle, then you will continue in stockinette with garter edges until you reach the ribbing for the back. The decrease and increase areas end up forming most of the leg hole.
